Strategies in Rural Space
Under the name Strategies in Rural Space FLUSS has, since 2004, presented annual international art initiatives which position themselves beyond so-called “popular folk culture”, and instead address the social reality of what is “regional” in rural space.
nachbar[i]n (neighbour)
Since its foundation 1989 FLUSS has tried to establish a co-operation especially with organisations in the neighbouring countries of Eastern Europe. Numerous workshops and exhibitions featuring artists from the East always have been a core part of our activities. The series nachbar[i]n (neighbour) has been a cultural exchange project between neighbours in central and eastern Europe. Marking the start of this fledgling exchange was the exhibition nachbar[i]n - sasiadka in autumn 2002, showing the works of Austrian artists/groups in Poland and the works of Polish artists in Austria. Bilingual catalogues completed the mutual excourse.
Weinviertler Fotowochen
Since 1989FLUSS organizes an annual summer school, the so called WeinviertlerFotowochen. Two workshops led by renowned artists, lectures, a final exhibition and photo festivity are fixed components of the event. Since 2001 the courses and lectures of the Fotowochen each have a common theme. Austrian and international artists teach the workshops, providing their concepts and their ways of working in collaboration with the participants of the courses.
Backlight – International Photographic Triennial
This Triennial, organized by the Photographic Centre Nykyaika in Tampere, Finland, was first held in 1987. Soon Backlight developed from a small local photography festival into a major event with co-organizers and partners in many European countries. Since 2005 FLUSS has been a co-organizer of this project funded by the EU Culture Programme, and actively depicted both the structure and the program of the festival. The Backlight 2008 edition was awarded as an exemplary European project by the European Commission in the "Culture in Motion Conference 2011” in Brussels.
Visions of Media Art
FLUSS and Medienwerkstatt Wien started together the annual series “Visionen der Medienkunst” (“Visions of Media Art”), inspired by artists who went down in history as designers of utopias. Historical programmatic writings and ideas serve as the starting point for current artistic positions.
A public talk will supplement the program and an accompanying webpage will provide theoretical demonstration material.
