BE(YOND) THE CRISIS

How is the crisis as a form anchored in contemporary art? What visual strategies do we choose when examining crises and their effects on our lives and society? How is our perception of the crisis situated as an aesthetic experience? In which reflective processes do we find ourselves as artists, when art itself as a social domain is in a constant crisis? And can we succeed in acquiring it with our own crisis experience and perspective? Based on these and other questions, we will together search for our own (artistic) approaches to crises.

The current social crisis triggered by the pandemic will be a key issue for us. Suddenly there is talk of a “new normal”, while we are in a permanent state of emergency, which will probably keep us busy for a long time after it has been medically managed. In this context, experiences of vulnerability, uncertainty vs. insecurity, friendship, care work and memory are some of the focal points that we will deal with in the course of developing our work.

In the Weinviertel that surrounds us, we can work with the landscape as a reflection surface for the issues that concern us. Photography, video, research, text work or installation are possible artistic forms that can be developed within the framework of the workshop. As a starting point for the joint discussion, it is recommended to bring texts, objects or images that are important for one’s own artistic occupation or that are viewed as monuments of one‘s own crises. Together we will work on the contextualization and imagery that formally convey our experiences.
